Lots of people know the story of Roger Bannister, who, in 1954 became the first man to run a mile in under 4 minutes. Bannister has been quoted as saying “However ordinary each of us may seem, we are all in some way special, and can do things that are extraordinary, perhaps until then…even thought impossible.”

Roll forward to 2019 and Eliud Kipchoge has very recently run a marathon in under 2 hours. On being interviewed about his win, Kipchoge said, “This shows no-one is limited. Now I've done it, I am expecting more people to do it after me."

A while ago I found myself at the bottom of my own metaphorical (and seemingly insurmountable) cliff face, standing in the shadow looking up, feeling small…


“All I wanted to do was get to the top in the sun! Now, the easy thing to do would be to hop on the tourist shuttle at the bottom of the cliff and get up there as quickly as possible: but something told me there was a better way…

Whilst I’m absolutely not one for making life any harder than it has to be (quite the opposite), I had to question what I would learn from taking the shuttle… not a lot I concluded. 


The other option was to try to climb the wall by myself – who knows, I may have had some success....
